THE DO-IT-YOURSELF SERIES / 001

CHOOSE A GOAL.
BUILD YOUR
AI AGENT.

Not sure where to start? Find a goal that matters to you, then build an AI assistant to help you make a realistic plan, take the first step and adjust as life happens.

BUILD MY AGENT ↗Show me how it works ↓
a little help getting going.
01 / THE GOAL

“WHAT DO I
WANT TO DO?”

A starting point. A deadline.
A plan that fits your actual week.

02 / YOUR AGENT

YOUR GOAL.
YOUR AGENT.

Ask. Plan. Check in. Adjust.

03 / THE NEXT MOVE

One useful week.
Then another.

YOU CHOOSE THE DIRECTION. ↗
MAKE A START. BUILD SOMETHING. FIGURE IT OUT.

01 / GET YOUR BEARINGS

AN AGENT, IN
HUMAN WORDS.

A focused AI assistant with a job, context and a repeatable way of helping you.

Here, “agent” means an assistant you configure in your own account. A role alone does not give it qualifications, tools or automatic reminders. The useful part is the system you give it: what matters, how to help, and when to ask.

This guide takes you from a vague ambition to an agent you can return to, a first plan and a weekly check-in.

BEFORE THE PLAN / CHOOSE YOUR DIRECTION

YOU DON’T NEED
A GOAL READY.

“I HAVE TOO MANY IDEAS.”

Bring up to three. Your builder helps compare what matters most, what fits your capacity and what you would have to put aside. You make the choice.

“I DON’T KNOW WHAT I WANT.”

Start with what you want more of, less of, or have been curious about. Choose a small experiment and a review date instead of forcing a huge commitment.

“I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT I WANT.”

Define what success looks like, your starting point and the time you actually have. Then give your agent a clear job.

THE RESULT

One chosen focus, an observable first milestone, a realistic timeframe and an assistant whose support fits your life.

DIFFERENT GOALS / THE SAME APPROACH

WHAT WOULD YOU
LIKE TO MOVE FORWARD?

LEARN SOMETHING

Explore a language or subject → choose a useful first milestone → create a study partner that helps you practise and review.

MAKE SOMETHING

Finish a short story, portfolio or creative project → define a first draft → create an assistant for structure, feedback and next steps.

BUILD AN IDEA

Explore a business or personal project → identify the first question to test → create an assistant for research, planning and reviewing evidence.

WORK TOWARDS A FITNESS GOAL

Choose a realistic target → establish your baseline → create a planning assistant for a manageable routine and check-ins.

These are fictional examples. Your goal can be small, practical, ambitious or exploratory. The builder adapts its questions to your choice.

02 / OPEN YOUR WORKSPACE

FIRST, SOMEWHERE
FOR YOUR AGENT TO LIVE.

Start with the route that fits what you already use. You can use the copy-and-paste version without setting up local files.

EASIEST START

CHATGPT

  1. Open ChatGPT and sign in to your own account.
  2. Start a new chat. Copy your personalised builder prompt below, paste it into the message box and send it.
  3. Answer the builder’s questions. Review the brief, then ask for your Agent Pack.
  4. Start another chat for your finished agent. Paste its role instructions and current-context note together, then send the first-session prompt.
  5. Return to that chat for check-ins. Keep a copy of the latest context note so you can restart if needed.

If you use a project, keep the instructions and context there using the controls available in your account. A plain chat works as the starting route.

LOCAL FILE SETUP

CODEX ON DESKTOP

  1. Use the official desktop setup, install the supported app and sign in.
  2. Choose Codex, create or open a dedicated project folder for your agent, and start with New chat.
  3. Paste the builder prompt and answer its questions. Once your Agent Pack is ready, copy the local setup request below into that project chat.
  4. Review the proposed files. AGENTS.md holds the job and rules; CURRENT.md holds your goal and latest state.
  5. In a new project chat, ask it to read both files before helping. Verify the goal and constraints it reports.

Labels and availability can differ by device, plan and workspace. If you do not see Codex, use the ChatGPT route. No paid purchase is required by this guide; your account’s normal limits apply.

03 / THE AGENT THAT BUILDS YOUR AGENT

LET’S MAKE
THIS ABOUT YOU.

Already have a goal? Add it below. Still choosing? Select “I’m not sure” and leave the goal blank. The builder will help you explore, choose and define your first milestone. Your answers stay in this page while it is open; they are not sent to a server.

WHAT THE BUILDER SHOULD GIVE YOU

A named role + complete instructions + your goal and current context + a first-session prompt + a weekly check-in + a progress log. Check the brief before accepting the pack.

04 / OPTIONAL WORKED EXAMPLE

ONE EXAMPLE: RUNNING
TO “HERE’S MY NEXT STEP.”

The scenario below is fictional. Use it to understand the process, then build a plan around your own starting point.

AN EXAMPLE BRIEF

BUILD A
RUNNING COACH.

The ambition
Work towards a first 10 km event.
The starting point
Can run for 20 minutes comfortably; recent consistency still needs checking.
The constraint
Three possible training windows, around work and family.
The first decision
Is the date realistic for this baseline? Ask before planning.

THE COACH ASKS BEFORE IT PLANS.

How much have you actually run recently? What was your longest recent run? Which days fit? How are you recovering? Are there relevant injuries or health considerations?

Then it helps define success, proposes a first week and explains how to adjust it. Race distance alone is not enough information to prescribe training.

“I missed two sessions and only have one window left.”

A useful coach asks what you completed and how you feel, then chooses a realistic next step. It does not pile every missed session into Sunday.

An AI planning assistant does not replace a qualified coach or clinician. For pain, injury, illness, pregnancy or postpartum return to exercise, get appropriate individual guidance before relying on a training plan.

What belongs in your running agent’s instructions?

Ask about baseline and recovery; distinguish planned from completed sessions; explain intensity in understandable language; keep training within agreed capacity; offer a reduced week; review evidence before progression; flag uncertain or unrealistic targets; and never invent completed runs.

Use your own goal, dates and training history. The example is not an individual training prescription.

05 / USE IT, THEN KEEP IT USEFUL

THE PROMPTS
YOU’LL COME BACK TO.

01

START YOUR FIRST WEEK

Paste this after your agent’s instructions and current context. Review its assumptions before agreeing to the plan.

02

DO YOUR WEEKLY CHECK-IN

Report what happened, how it felt and what fits next week. Request an updated context note and keep your own copy.

03

RESET A WEEK THAT WENT SIDEWAYS

Less time does not mean cramming the original plan into fewer days. Ask for the next useful move.

Download the weekly check-in

06 / MAKE THE PLAN VISIBLE

A WEEK YOU
CAN ACTUALLY USE.

Put your reviewed plan into this reusable sheet. For running, enter sessions agreed with your coach; the page does not prescribe distances or progression.

SUNDAY CHECK-IN

Edit each day, then print or choose Save as PDF in your browser’s print dialog. Entries are not saved after you close or reload the page. This is a blank, adaptable weekly layout. Fill it with your own reviewed plan.

BEFORE YOU GO

A FEW USEFUL ANSWERS.

Is this a shared GPT or an app I install?

It is a portable agent-builder instruction pack and guide. Copy it into your own account to run the builder, then use the resulting agent in its own chat or local project. This page does not install an agent or provide a hosted AI chatbot.

Will my agent remember everything or message me on its own?

Do not assume that. Keep your current-context note and reuse it when starting a new chat. Reminders, calendar access and background tasks are separate capabilities that need explicit setup and verification.

What if its answers are generic or too ambitious?

Say: “Use my actual baseline and time constraints. Ask what you are missing. Show assumptions and give me a smaller first week.” Correct the role instructions if the problem repeats.

Can I use it for something other than running?

Yes. The builder asks about your goal first. A study partner, creative-project assistant or business-planning partner can use the same goal → role → context → plan → review structure.

How do I know it is ready?

Ask the finished agent to restate your goal, deadline and constraints. Try a normal-week request and a disrupted-week request. If it invents facts, exceeds your capacity or claims tools it lacks, correct the instructions before relying on it.

Where do the setup instructions come from?

Checked 18 October 2026 against official OpenAI documentation. Interfaces and account availability can change. Use the current desktop quickstart and projects and chats guide if your screen differs. Be Curious is independent and is not affiliated with OpenAI.

You don’t need the whole thing figured out.
